About Brittle Pins

An AI engineering project that uses the physical world to expose the fragility of “intelligent” systems.

Brittle Pins has two faces: a web-based technical field journal you're reading now – this one is for deeper, text-first exploration, and a YouTube channel called Brittle Pins Go Nuts, where Meccano structures, microcontrollers, sensors, and motors turn abstract ideas into vivid, hands-on demonstrations.

Purpose and Principles

At its core, Brittle Pins is about “physical parables” of AI brittleness. Each piece starts from a concrete device or setup – an unstable sensor, a twitchy motor, a flaky interface – and uses that to reveal how and why AI systems fail: dataset shift, noisy inputs, reward hacking, unsafe tool use, brittle decision boundaries, and more.

The hardware is simply a storytelling medium here. By watching physical systems misbehave, you gain an intuition for the fragility of AI-powered software in the real world.

Brittle Pins is explicitly designed with an engineering-first, credibility-focused approach in mind. Its storytelling may be occasionally playful, especially in the physical builds, but it's always anchored in clear explanations and honest analysis.

Artifacts and Code

Every substantial piece is accompanied by concrete engineering artifacts, such as:
